This poisonous virus!

This poisonous virus!

(Arthur Pink, "The Word of Truth")

By nature, both writer and reader are liars. "The wicked are estranged from the womb, they go astray as soon as they be born, speaking lies" (Psalm 58:3). No child has to be taught to lie擁t comes naturally to him. Nor does he have to be corrupted by contact with others揺e is born corrupt at the core of his being! This is the inevitable consequence of the Fall. Our first parents preferred the Devil's lie葉o God's Truth, and all of their descendants inherit this poisonous virus.

In consequence "the whole world lies in the wicked one" (1 John 5:19) and he is "a liar預nd the father of lies" (John 8:44). Thus by nature, we have no love for the Truth傭ut instead, we all have a strong antipathy and resistance against it. The unregenerate do not want to know the truth about themselves溶o, they wish to be flattered and encouraged to entertain a good opinion of themselves. Hence, the Lord Jesus declared "Because I tell you the Truth遥ou do not believe" (John 8:45). Had He told them pleasant lies葉hey would have welcomed Him.

Since the whole world lies in the wicked one, and he is the arch-liar, we should not be surprised at the world being so full of pretense and deceit預nd that the Truth of God is so bitterly hated. The fact is, that "Truth has fallen in the street!" (Isaiah 59:14) and is now being ruthlessly trampled on, on every side.

Obedience: The Prayer Life - Andrew Murray

Nothing feeds, nothing refreshes, nothing delights my soul

Nothing feeds, nothing refreshes, nothing delights my soul

(James Smith, "Precious Things from the Everlasting Hills")

"My meditation of Him shall be sweet!" Psalm 104:34

The Lord Jesus is the subject of my meditations. Not a day passes but my
thoughts are occupied with Him. Forget whom I may—I never forget Him.
Nothing feeds, nothing refreshes, nothing delights my soul
—like
vigorous meditations on Jesus. I dwell at times on . . .
  the glories of His person,
  the riches of His grace,
  the merit of His blood,
the transcendent glory of His righteousness,
  the tenderness of His sympathy,
  the constancy of His love,
  the vastness of His resources,
  the greatness of His power,
  the glory of His offices,
the prevalence of His intercession, and
the grandeur of His second coming—
until I am enamored with His beauty, and enraptured with His love!

My meditation of Jesus is sweet! I think of Him upon my bed, and
meditate on Him through the watches of the night.

Jesus is the solace and joy of my soul.
When all is dark within me,
when all is dreary around me,
when all is discouraging before me—
He fills me full of joy with His countenance.
One look from His eye,
one word from His lips,
one breath breathed on my soul—
relieves, restores, and makes me happy.

He is the river of pleasure—in which I sometimes bathe!
He is the Eden of delights—in which I sometimes walk!

Take away Jesus—and my soul droops, desponds, and dies!
Give me Jesus—and the enjoyment of His presence, and I can do without any other heaven!

He is the joy of my brightest days, and my solace in my dreariest nights!

One of the best jewels we have!

One of the best jewels we have!

(Sir Matthew Hale, 1609-1676)

"Show me, O LORD, my life's end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting is my life." Psalm 39:4Laziness grows on people; it begins in cobwebs, and ends in iron chains!

Be frugal with your time; it is one of the best jewels we have!

This is the very hell of Hell to the damned spirits--that they had once a time wherein they might have procured everlasting bliss and glory; but they foolishly and vainly misspent that time and season, which is now never to be recovered.

"Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.Psalm 90:12

In His humblest works!

In His humblest works!

(Thomas Guthrie, 1803-1873)
"The earth is full of His unfailing love!" Psalm 33:5

The British Museum possessed in the Portland Vase — one of the finest remains of ancient art. It may be remembered how, some years ago — the world of culture was shocked to hear that this precious relic had been shattered by a maniac's hand.

Without disparaging cultured taste, or this exquisite example of it — I venture to say that there is not a poor worm which we tread upon, nor a sere leaf which dances merrily in its fallen state to the autumn winds — but has superior claims upon our study and admiration. The child who plucks a lily or rose to pieces, or crushes the fragile form of a fluttering insect — destroys an intricate work which the highest human art could not invent, nor man's best skilled hand construct!

There is not a leaf which quivers on the trees of the forest — which does not eclipse the brightest glories of the painter's brush or the sculptor's chisel! A simple flower has no rival among the triumphs of invention, which the silly world flocks to see.

Yes, in His humblest works, God infinitely surpasses the highest efforts of all created skill.
"How many are Your works, O Lord! In wisdom You made them all; the earth is full of Your creatures!" Psalm 104:24

"The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge!" Psalm 19:1-2

Acquaintance With Grief

    Acquaintance With Grief

'A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.'

      Isaiah 53:3

We are not acquainted with grief in the way in which Our Lord was acquainted with it; we endure it, we get through it, but we do not become intimate with it.

At the beginning of life we do not reconcile ourselves to the fact of sin. We take a rational view of life and say that a man by controlling his instincts, and by educating himself, can produce a life which will slowly evolve into the life of God. But as we go on, we find the presence of something which we have not taken into consideration, viz., sin, and it upsets all our calculations.

Sin has made the basis of things wild and not rational. We have to recognize that sin is a fact, not a defect; sin is red-handed mutiny against God. Either God or sin must die in my life. The New Testament brings us right down to this one issue. If sin rules in me, God's life in me will be killed; if God rules in me, sin in me will be killed.

There is no possible ultimate but that. The climax of sin is that it crucified Jesus Christ, and what was true in the history of God on earth will be true in your history and in mine. In our mental outlook we have to reconcile ourselves to the fact of sin as the only explanation as to why Jesus Christ came, and as the explanation of the grief and sorrow in life.
